Here we have Poza las mujeres in Manati, Puerto Rico. I wrote a blog here 2 years ago about the destruction of this beautiful beach as week in and week out people leave there trash behind only to end up being blown by the wind into the ocean. That for the people who leave their trash behind is a welcomed solution as they are just too lazy to carry out their own garbage when it is light, yet they have no problem bringing it when it is heavy.

the wind was blowing the trash towards the ocean and no one cared

I have lived in Puerto Rico for the last 8 years and I have been on a mission for over the last 5 years walking all over this island to raise awareness to the litter with my environmental signs and this is one of the beaches I would visit mostly everyday.

“Pick up regardless of others stupidity, the change starts with us”

So as I arrived to the beach to do my protest of raising awareness and I see trash scattered about next to group of people and even stood on front of them with the sign depicted above.

That garbage was coming from a bag someone left behind on the rocks and it was ripped open by the many stray dogs that are around this beach.

So as this is a very windy beach, what occurs is the wind blowing the garbage out into the ocean. So I found Styrofoam plates, aluminum foil, plastic scattered about and people sitting right next to it and not ONE PERSON lifted a finger. But they are sure quick to lift their finger to open a can of beer or other alcoholic beverage.

It’s because of this that this beautiful island is like this, because it seems like the majority of the people does not want to do anything just go partying and drinking and thus solve their problems through the lens of an alcoholic beverage that they don’t see this beauty that is this island that is in front of them as they have taken it all for granted. I will be writing a blog on alcoholism soon as I think that is a major problem here and everywhere else for that matter.

Many would be quick to say “that is not their garbage” But I guess they prefer to sit next to that garbage and have the wind to blow it all over their bodies as I have seen throughout this island. I even saw people sitting by a toilet that someone left at the beach which could be read about here.

Many do not think about the other species that inhabit our home that live in the ocean that have to suffer from our consequence and our neglect. They would go on clueless about that just like they have been clueless of this beautiful paradise that they live in. Click Here to see a protest I did at the beach with a bag over my head to showcase what happens when they leave their garbage.

I made a video collecting the trash in front of them and speaking English so they know that the one who is cleaning is not even native from here as many people I see from other countries who come here picking up garbage.

I see many tourists cleaning up because they see the paradise that this island truly is. I wrote a blog entitled foreigners care more about this island than the people born here which can be read here.

I know that there are many here that are making the change, but on this island and the rest of the world there are too many plagues and too little of a cure when we need more cures and fewer plagues.

Please do not be like these people and do something as I made this challenge asking people to pick up just one bagful of garbage. Do not settle for mediocrity, this island is a paradise but the people choose to have confined it into hell

Let us be the change this world needs. Let us all be the guardian of this beautiful home of ours that we forgot and have neglected for so long.

The change starts with us and with our actions.

Over to you. Do you think they should have picked it up or do you think it is okay to ignore this problem? What would you have done? Please leave any comments down below. Please share

  1. Hi Jivan,
I really admire your tenacity in bringing light to this topic, despite the opposition and ignorance of people.

Unfortunately, a lot of people in the island I come from (PR), my “compatriotas”, are only preoccupied with the appearances and how to look better than the one next to them, in all endeavors of life. On top of that, they constantly numb their brains and bodies with alcohol and poor dietary choices, don’t like to read, and BOOOM💥💥💥!, you have a recipe for disaster, for the brain and body function.

When you follow the lifestyle I just described, the frontal cortex of the brain can’t execute its task, which is critical thinking and sound decision making, so technically they are going through life like zombies, and don’t even know it.

In my opinion is a really irresponsible way to live, and it saddens me to see my beautiful PR in these conditions.

Thanks for the work you do!!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

    1. Thanks for your comment. I wholeheartedly agree and I am writing a blog on alcoholism coming soon. I do think it is a major problem and many people are not aware of it. So I want to shed light to that. I write a lot about the issues here but like you said many people don’t read so my words are only being read by those who do enjoy reading. My spanish is not too good to actually speak a lot in order to make videos. But I will keep writing and putting it out there and hope something blooms. Thanks again, please subscribe to my newsletter to be updated monthly as I plan on posting more wonderful things.
