My challenge to the world: Grow just one plant!
Updated: March 28 2019
Many around the world are quarantined in our homes due to the coronavirus. I am currently in Puerto Rico, where the weather is warm year round and I truly believe Puerto Rico needs to grow more food as 85 percent of the food is imported. If things get worse and that ship never comes, well let’s say things will get ugly quick.
I want to propose a challenge to the world and especially to the people of Puerto Rico as food could be grown all year long in this beautiful tropical climate. Here is the food I have grown in Puerto Rico.
Seeds could be purchased for 99 cents, I buy my seeds from seedsnow, click here to visit their store.
I think growing our own foods is our key to being independent. It is our foundation that we have forgotten. We have forgotten where food actually comes from since all we eat is chemically processed junk.
Get yourself a container and some soil or directly sow it in the ground if you have a yard with soil, which most people have in Puerto Rico. Get yourself some seeds of any vegetable and grow just one plant, could be peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, whatever. Something you enjoy.
I believe we have to cultivate the revolution as written here in another one of my blog’s.
Now grow just one plant, maybe even two. Tell your friends about it and get them in this challenge.
We could even take this challenge even further, if we get our friends involved everyone could come together when it is time to harvest and hopefully this crisis has subsided where we no longer are quarantined and things return to normal, everyone involved can share and even trade the bounties with one another. Someone could grow eggplants, another could grow peppers.
Have a nice BBQ get together of fresh organic veggies. Sharing what we grew with love.. Even if you have an all tomato growing event with different wonderful tasty varieties.
Many don’t like tomatoes, but that is because they never had fresh harvested tomatoes. There are many varieties to choose from. Explore!
Make sure it is NON-GMO (If you don’t know what GMO is, research! Here is a wonderful world on Monsanto and Gmo).
Many would say growing food is hard, even if it is to grow just one plant, but that is just what you are telling yourself. Nothing is really hard, we just make things harder than they are by putting these mental blocks.
Just research on what you want to grow. You have the power of the internet in your hands to learn many wonderful things.
Start with that one plant and grow it, nurture it, love it. It is now your child. It is your baby. If you have children, get them in the challenge as well so they could take care of LIFE and see the beauty of life as I think gardening should be one of the prerequisites in life for a child.
I think they should learn how to grow food, so they can grow peace. So they can learn to respect life. Learn patience. To connect. I think everyone needs this element in their life to see things differently and to connect since many of us are so disconnected from nature.
There is not one excuse for people not doing this. Not one. Get yourself a container of 5 gallons and some good soil and those seeds of your choosing and get started. Stick it outside in a corner with lots of sunshine and you are good to go. Get radically wild and get even more containers and grow different veggies, if you are up for the task.
Now I am not trying to convert you people into vegetarians or vegans, which I am, as I wrote here on why I went vegan, I am more likely trying to convert you into growers, into being self-sufficient.
We no longer eat real food. We are now dependent on others for our food. When we do eat real food, it is laced with pesticides and chemicals. Often imported from some other place, so you are not getting it fresh and like I said there is nothing like a fresh off the vine tomato or pepper or anything for that matter.
Growing food is also therapeutic, we live a life burdened with stress in this illusion we live in. Growing your own food is a wonderful stress reliever. As I always say I don’t grow food, they grow me.
Also when growing food we often see things in different perspectives and get a real appreciation for something that we take for granted, LIFE.
What a wonderful time to grow, So start getting ready to plant. Take your kids out with you. get your hands in that dirt and enjoy the joy of gardening.
