The food I have grown in Puerto Rico
I am currently residing in the sunny tropical island of Puerto Rico (by way of Brooklyn), which for those that don’t know is located in the Caribbean. The great part of living here is the warm sunny weather year round. The climate is great for growing food year round. But there are not many growers.
I have challenged people to grow at least one plant, which could be read in this blog. Yet that is too hard for most people. I have inspired a few to grow, but I think it’s time for the people to realize our true potential and in writing this blog, I hope to inspire many more. I also think parents should be teaching their children how to grow, so that in turn it would grow respect into them. The education is in the dirt. To learn how to respect life.
Being from NYC, I never experienced the joy of growing my own food. That was a foreign concept to me. I mention this in most of my post and will write a blog about it in the near future, I mention this concrete mentality that we develop. Rushing through life, we barely ever notice that life is all around us, but we have smothered it with concrete and our concrete mindset.
Eight five percent of the food here is imported, which is very sad. But as I mention in another blog, people are just too dependent on the government’s hand out. Why grow your own food, when they give you food stamps. Other people who don’t grow just have no time as they are too busy trying to make a living just to buy the food in the first place. It’s the sad reality we live in.
If a major natural disaster were to happen, people would be running around clueless begging the government to come help them, not realizing the food comes from the land and from our hands that sow the seeds. That is the world we live in.
I had no experience in growing what so ever, but people make it this big thing and make it so technical, when it is as simple as dropping a seed into soil and watering it. We have the internet, all you have to do is search for tips on growing them better. But we just use the internet just to entertain ourselves.
I have grown many vegetables in a very small space, there is just no excuse not to grow. But many people continue to make excuses. If you have a roof, you can grow. If you have a balcony, you can grow. All it takes is a container. Growing your own food, is like growing your own money and it is one way of combating this bullshit system.
If you fail your first time, keep at it. Which is why I made that initial challenge, hoping that growing that one plant would inspire them to grow more. There is no greater joy than enjoying the fruits of your labor. No greater joy than enjoying fresh tomatoes, the fresh herbs and veggies that you grew with love.
Most people don’t even know what a fresh tomato taste like. Most people don’t even know the names of the different types of vegetables, since they are used to GMO-laden processed foods. The only food they know comes in a little nice packaged, canned or frozen, void of nutrition. All you have to do is press that instant minute button on the microwave since people just want convenience.
Time for us to get off our knees and start producing again. Stop depending on governments and corporations for your food.
Well without further ado, here are the food that I have grown with pictures down below. I started growing in bad clay soil. Which made it even harder on me. But with a little work in changing the soil, I made it work for me.
All grown organically, which means no pesticides no chemicals and no damn GMO! (GMO are gentically modified organism. Research what it is.)
The food I have grown in Puerto Rico
Tomatoes, peppers, garlic, potatoes, carrots, eggplants, papaya, okra, watermelons, strawberries, passion fruit, zucchini, squash, amaranth, buckwheat, kale, pineapples, aloe, Swiss chard, Corn
