Currently I find myself in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. A magical enchanted place in which I had the privilege of living in for the last eight years by way of Brooklyn, NY. Click here to read why I moved to Puerto Rico. I think that everyone should explore nature in Puerto Rico.
Many people would choose to go elsewhere for their vacation getaway, But I feel Puerto Rico has so much to offer and then some. The best part is that if you are a US citizen, no passport is required as Puerto Rico is a “U.S. territory”.
Rivers, beaches, forest, caves, camping, hiking! Oh my!
A magical island with about 5,385 miles of river, about 225 named rivers. All you have to do is walk down the river and find many other unknown magical spots. There are over 300 beautiful beaches. Just like everywhere else in the world, each with their own charm and magic.
There is a river and a beach for each day of the year and then some. All in this tiny island, so what you have is all this beauty to explore in a condensed area. Condensed beauty!, Nothing is ever too far away, you can visit many rivers and beaches in one day, but why the rush. Take the time to enjoy each one. There are many waterfalls to be discovered and many sunsets to be seen.
The miles of beaches offers wonderful snorkeling or diving adventures. There are large great white sharks that often eat people up if they get too close. Just joking. You won’t find many things that will eat you in Puerto Rico. But you will find beautiful turtles, stingrays, colorful fishes of all kind and on occasion a barracuda. Shark sightings are rare.
The beautiful beaches also offer wonderful surfing throughout the island, such as in rincon, Isabela, Aguadilla and Manati.
Puerto Rico offers adventurous nature lovers the opportunity to go hiking, spelunking, rock climbing, rappelling, or rafting. Moreover, you would also find many places to hike, such as el yunque rain forest and many other wonderful places. There are also many caves to explore, In some you could also discover indigenous hieroglyphs.
If you love camping, Puerto Rico offers many wonderful places to camp. You can also find a secluded beach or river and just pitch your tent.
wildlife
As for wildlife, you won’t find much venomous creatures out and about. There are many reptiles such as lizards and iguanas. Many beautiful birds. If you visit the other nearby islands, you will find wild horses in vieques and deer in culebra. You might even find some monkeys on the island that escaped from captivity.
Furthermore, Puerto Rico has warm tropical weather year around to enjoy all of these places whenever you want. The rivers and beaches in the winter are refreshing as the water does not get too cold. Well for some it might be, but for me it is wonderful.
For the last 5 years I have defended these beautiful beaches and rivers from trash the people leave at the beaches. I would walk around with my many signs to raise awareness to the trash because I grew tired of seeing how the people treated this paradise that is their home. Click here to read why I decided to be the guardian.
As much as I rant about the garbage here, it is not as dirty as many other countries as garbage is a worldwide problem. Many of the beaches and rivers that are visited by many of the locals get trashed the most, but you would find many pristine beaches and rivers off the beaten path throughout the island that are kept clean. But you would find the roads dirty as it seems people enjoy tossing their garbage out of their car windows.
I have been raising awareness because I think it is inexcusable to treat such a paradise like a landfill. Click here to see a video asking which island do they prefer, landfill or paradise.
I believe the people who live on this island should also explore the beautiful rivers and beaches. Many people here have not even seen many of the enchantments that lies in this paradise as I feel that they are disconnected from nature just like how most of humanity has. Also, I think they should explore and take care of this beauty. First they must realize the paradise in front of them. But I digress.
Another reason to explore nature in Puerto Rico is to explore yourself like I have as I have been on a journey of self-introspection and self-realization. Being in solitude in the many beautiful places in Puerto Rico has helped me uncover many of the layers I conformed to. I went from the concrete jungle to becoming radically wild. reconnected deeply to mother nature. I feel that Puerto Rico is a perfect place to reconnect again.
So come to this beautiful paradise and explore it’s many enchantments. I am a tour guide and could also take you to many radically wild places in Puerto Rico or I could advise you where to go. The people are wonderful, friendly and very helpful. The weather is always a delight. If you come visit please take the one trash bag challenge. Take some bags with you on your adventure and pick up one bagful of trash that you find. Perhaps the locals can see this and follow your example. Maybe they just continue to ignore it as many do.
I will soon write a pros and cons of living here. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to live an off the grid sustainable life because growing food all year round is why I love living here.
