Puerto Rico Paradise or landfill? This question also applies to most of the world. I drive around this beautiful island, visit the beaches and rivers and all I find is trash everywhere.

We have forgotten how this world could really be a paradise. We have to look at the beauty of what it is and start changing the way we treat this beautiful world around us and how we view it. We have taken heaven and confined it into prison.

Here is a video I made of the beautiful places in Puerto Rico, the one side they show you while hiding the other reality that most people ignore here and that is the landfill that this beautiful world is becoming.

But by no means let this discourage anyone from visiting this beautiful treasure. Because there are so many beautiful treasures on this island to visit.

Social Experiment Puerto Rico: Would The People Pick Up Or Ignore The Garbage

Everyday I go to a beautiful beach or river or drive down the roads of this beautiful paradise that is Puerto Rico I it inundated with garbage, Which is why I decided to walk around with signs at the beaches and rivers so that I could raise awareness to this issue.

Every day that I would go clean up whatever beach or river that I might be in, while I noticed everyone else just happily ignores it. I even issued a challenge for people to pick up garbage at the beaches and rivers which can be found here.

One day I went to this beautiful beach that I always would walk with my signs in and would clean it as I went and wrote a blog about it’s destruction here because I would always find garbage there and so on this day I found garbage yet again hidden in the bushes, so I decided to remove it and place it where it would be visible and thought it was time I did a social experiment.

So I decided to leave the garbage I took out of nature since it has become their garbage can and I decided to put it in the walkway going to the beach.

I then went and hid behind a tree (Well, I wasn’t hiding, but they did not notice me, like they don’t notice the garbage.)

I wanted to see if someone would do what I do everyday that I go to the beach and that is leaving it cleaner (or try to at least.) than it was before.

So how did the people do?

Well as seen in the video one group left added on to that garbage by leaving a bottle in which I had to confront them about it.

I stood there for 30 minutes and no one decided to pick it up. I of course removed the garbage from there, but I am just one man.

Imagine all these people coming together to clean up and leaving it cleaner than they found it.

I think it’s time for the people to wake up and take action (Again take my one trash bag challenge.) and to stop treating paradise like a landfill and stop accepting this as normal. I made this video here asking the people which they prefer, landfill or paradise.

We should be striving for something better, a better world, a better us! Stop accepting mediocrity. We have to stop treating our home, our mother like garbage. Start respecting, cherishing and appreciating this beautiful gift we have been bestowed. For it is the Only home we have.

Simple Solution For Throwing Away Cigarette Butts

Cigarette butts, the most littered item in the world, with roughly 4.5 trillion being tossed each year. I wrote a blog about the world not being an ashtray, which can be found here. Down below I offer a solution to this problem.

The lobbying group American for Nonsmokers’ Rights (ANR) reported that 1.69 billion pounds of butts ended up as toxic waste last year.

There are over 176,000,000 pounds of discarded cigarette butts in the United States each year.

The cigarette butts present a serious hazard to our natural world.

Contrary to popular belief, cigarette butts are NOT biodegradable! Cigarette butt waste is a huge environmental issue, with a global impact — it is both unsightly and unhealthy.

The butt itself is comprised of two parts: A plastic filter and the remnants of the used tobacco. While the leftover tobacco is by definition biodegradable, the filters are made from a plastic called cellulose acetate, a compound that eventually breaks down but never disappears. Ever. which can take many (estimated 2 to 25) years to decompose. Cigarette butts may seem small, but with several trillion butts littered every year, the toxic chemicals add up!

Combine that with the roughly 4,000 chemicals found in cigarettes, and you’ve got the recipe for a pretty awful eco-aftertaste.

Cigarettes contain over 165 chemicals – Some of the chemicals smokers inhale:
- Benzo[a]pyrene: found in coal tar and cigarette smoke and it is one of the most potent cancer causing chemical in the world.
- Arsenic: deadly poison that causes diarrhea, cramps, anemia, paralysis and malignant skin tumors. It is used in pesticides.
- Acetone: It’s one of the active ingredients in nail polish remover.
- Lead: Lead poisoning stunts growth, causes vomiting, and causes brain damage.
- Formaldehyde: causes cancer, can damage lungs, skin, and digestive systems. Embalmers use it to preserve dead bodies.
- Toluene: highly toxic, commonly use as an ingredient in paint thinner.
- Butane: highly flammable butane is one of the key components in gasoline.
- Cadmium: cause damage to the liver, kidneys and brain, and stays in the body for years.
- Ammonia: causes individuals to absorb more nicotine, keeping them hooked on smoking.
- Benzene: found in pesticides and gasoline.
Plastic pieces have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales, and other marine creatures that mistake them as food, swallowing harmful plastic and toxic chemicals. Ingestion of plastic cigarette filters is a threat to wildlife. Sometimes even young children pick up and ingest cigarette butts.
Wind and rain often carry cigarette butts into waterways, where the toxic chemicals in the cigarette filters leak out, threatening the quality of the water and the creatures that live in it.

Solution

The easiest way to make a difference? Don’t litter in the first place !

We live in an unconscious world where most people are not conscious of this world we live in, we develop and conform to these bad habits as we tend to view it as being normal. Here are my site, I try to offer solutions and ideas to the issues at hand. I don’t have all the answers, but maybe an idea I have can spark another in another person.

Often times when I protested at the beaches here in Puerto Rico, I would carry a sign around stating that the world is not an ashtray.

During the protest, many would ask, well what can I do with the cigarette butts? I would tell them, that beer can you hold that is empty is one viable solution but here is another.

Along with all the cigarette butts that get discarded daily, I notice another trend, people also discard the empty cigarette boxes everywhere as well. Not all people, but I see those empty boxes littered in many beaches here.

So with the many as 10 packs of cigarette that cigarette smokers consume, why not take one of those empty boxes and use it as an ashtray.

Simply, take the empty box and instead of flicking it carelessly all over the place, you instead deposit it inside that very box. Then you empty that box in a proper container at the end of the day and reuse that same box to repeat the process or use one of your new shiny box of the next pack you buy.

We have to start taking responsibility for our actions and stop leaving these negative footprints, the footprints of humanity behind. We should not be used to this way of being. We should strive to improve ourselves everyday so that we can improve the quality of life around us.

I often think that with all these toxic chemicals that are in these cigarette butts that many smokers know full well what they are consuming, that there mentality is, “well I don’t care about poisoning my own body, why should I care about poisoning the rest of the world. ”

I think that is a mentality that has to change.

So I implore you to please discard your cigarette butts appropriately. Please share this with others. Regardless if you smoke or not, many of you have many friends that smoke and stay silent to them littering making you complicit to their actions. Please be vocal and stop accepting this behavior as normal.

11 facts not to use plastic and what we could do about it.

Currently, I am in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, I pick up trash every time I go anywhere on this island since it has become a landfill, I find many plastic cups, bags, straws that would all end up in the ocean and suffocating the species that call this world home if no one picked it up.

But no one gives a damn since we live in a world where people no longer respect life. So much plastic and for what, we buy cups and Use it only once and then throw it wherever and so it continues. We use shopping bags for one or two things only because it’s convenient.

It’s not only here, but in many parts of our world. I think we must stop using plastic cups, bags, and everything else made from it. Stop using things that continue to contribute to this world we have created. So much plastic that we are drowning in garbage.

But it is that people want convenience. They do not want to bring things that have to be washed later. And we continue every week with mountains of garbage on top of more trash, since people’s minds are full of garbage that they do not think of the effects they cause and thus we continue to contribute to this inundation.

Here in Puerto Rico, the government is passing a law banning plastic bags. But it is sad that people need the government to tell them they have to stop using it. When people should be more aware of how we live in this world and the impact we create. People will continue to use bags until they prohibit it, when they could stop now.

11 reasons to stop using plastic

44 percent of all seabird species, 22 percent of cetaceans, all sea turtle species and a growing list of fish species have been documented with plastic in or around their bodies..
Billions of pounds of plastic can be found in swirling convergences in the oceans making up about 40 percent of the world’s ocean surfaces. 80 percent of pollution enters the ocean from the land.
Annually approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. More than one million bags are used every minute.
Plastic in the ocean breaks down into such small segments that pieces of plastic from a one liter bottle could end up on every mile of beach throughout the world.
Plastic chemicals can be absorbed by the body—93 percent of Americans age six or older test positive for BPA (a plastic chemical).
It takes 500-1,000 years for plastic to degrade.
50 percent of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away.
Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.
Americans throw away 35 billion plastic water bottles every year, now multiply that number with the rest of the world
Plastic constitutes approximately 90 percent of all trash floating on the ocean’s surface, with 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile.
One million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans.

Ways to stop using plastic

If each person brought their own cups and plates and washed it when they get home, we could eliminate much of the waste that we contribute to. Use reusable glass bottles or metal containers.
We should no longer accept bags and instead use bags made out of fabric. We could do our part to improve our world and stop contributing because you are all complicit for continuing to use plastic.
Spread the word. Talk to your family and friends about why it is important to reduce the plastic in our lives and the impact of the pollution.
I know it’s hard to completely ban the use of it, but if you must use it for certain things. recycle. I know there are many places recycle in mostly every city.

The One Trash Bag Challenge To Change Our Environment

Hi there my beautiful wild souls. For over the past 5 years I have been walking around the beautiful beaches and rivers of Puerto Rico with signs to raise awareness to the trash people would leave behind.

As I went along the beaches and rivers, I would clean whatever garbage I found as I decided to be the guardian of the beaches and rivers here and I think we could all be the the guardian of where ever we may be.

UPDATE! I wrote this in 2015 and now I see that now in 2019 people are doing a challenge to pick up trash. My challenge is similar.

My challenge is for every one person or group that goes to the beaches or river or wherever they may be and to pick up just one bag full of garbage from your surroundings. Just one.

Today, I counted approximately over 100 people at the beach. Now imagine each person or group picks up 1 bag full of garbage from the surroundings that have been neglected. We are those dents and together collectively could make the biggest impact.

What a beautiful thing it is when we could come together as one. We can flip the script. It is us who could make a difference. Reverse the trend. One garbage bag is all it takes.

Starts with the roads around where you live, do you choose to drive by the filth everyday or do you chose to drive by flowers growing there instead.

Taking it further as I wrote here, 11 reasons to stop using plastic. Stop using plastic bags, plastic cups.. etc. When you go out to places take cups that you can reuse, shop with fabric bags. Think eco-friendly.

The things we do in our everyday life, do we contribute to the mess or do we try to do our best to better this world. We must go above and beyond.

The benefits to this is that you do something good for your world. something positive and at the same time, you will feel good in doing something good for your world.

Knowing that you are making the difference in this world and leaving a future that our future grandchildren could enjoy as well. It all starts TODAY! Please share. Much love and positive energy.

Hola todos mi hermanos y hermanas

Me gustaría lanzar un reto. Cada vez que vas a la playa, río o lo que sea, recoja una o dos bolsa de basura y llenarlo de la basura que estas en los caminos.

Como ejemplo, cerca de los tubos de Manati hay un bosque lleno de basura, has escondido en los arboles de las playas. Simplemente cuando llegan a las playas recoje una bolsa llena de basura y haciste su parte.

Ahora haz que tus amigos participar y juntos podemos hacer la diferencia. Solo una bolsa cada uno cada vez que vamos para estos sitios bonito de esta hermosa paraiso mundo en que vivimos.

Poco a poco puedemos cambiar esto. Empieza por no ignorar la basura a su alrededor. Ya que la gente se queda sentado cerca la basura como si fuera normal. Correr la voz. Empieza con su barrios, mira fuera de su casa, la carreteras que tu vez cada dia. Si estas llena de basura, Empieza con una bolsa cada dia que lo pasa.

Y para ir mas allá, como escribe aquí dejen de usar plásticos de un solo uso, bolsas plástica, vasos. traigan lo vaso que se pueden sigue usando. Cambiamos como miramos y tratamos el mundo. Compra con fundas de tela. Dile no a el plástico. Contribuimos a el daño o tratamos de mejorar este mundo. Debemos ir más allá. Piensen.

Lo beneficios de hace esto es hacer algo bueno, no para su isla, para su mundo y para todos los especie que lo llamas su casa. Recogiendo solo una bolsa cada vez, te sentirás muy bien de hacer algo positivo.

Que ha contribuido a cambiar nuestro mundo. Que ha contribuido para un mejor mañana para dejar un futuro bonito para que nuestros hijos y nietos tambien pueden disfrutar de este hermoso bella mundo. Y ese es el mundo que ustedes JUNTOS puedes dejan.

Why What I Did For The Beaches Of Puerto Rico Is A Lost Cause

I am currently living on the island of Puerto Rico where I have resided for over the past 9 years. For the past 6 years, I have been on an ongoing mission protesting in various beaches and rivers on this island with my signs as I decided to be the guardian of the beaches and rivers. My goal

My goal was to educate and raise awareness to the people from all the litter that they leave behind at the beaches and rivers and so that they can open their eyes and realize this beautiful paradise around them.

This plight was not an easy one as I have faced threats and recently was shot at the face for defending the beach. Read more about that here.

I believe what I did for this island was just a lost cause as I find this beautiful island just to be a lost cause as it seems like the majority of the people don’t care about this island enough to do something about the problems, be it environmental or otherwise.

On a hot summers day, this beach would get crowded and well as most beaches that get crowded, they turn into landfills as people leave their trash behind. Here I wrote about the destruction of poza de las mujeres.

Every time I go to the beaches or rivers or just driving down the roads, I would find plastic cups and bags, empty bags of potato chips, straws, bottles, cans of beer, and cigarette butts all over the ground.

People would walk by and over the trash because in Puerto Rico and in many parts of our world, Garbage has become second nature.

I would find people sitting next to the garbage on the beach. It has become their decoration as the people choose to ignore the garbage. I dedicate my time to pick up garbage after garbage and raising awareness, and I often asked myself why?, When it seems like the majority of the people here and everywhere else in this world for that matter just don’t care.

We no longer care

We don’t care about this world anymore, we only care about the artificial things. I believe it is time to wake up to see the beauty in this beautiful world we all call home.

We all have a voice but all I can hear is my own. Because people walk around as if their tongues were cut off.People have hands and yet they take no action in doing things to start making the change. Their hands are busy holding their alcoholic beverages as it seems that drinking and having a good time takes top priority over trying to be the change this island desperately needs.

Many would wonder why I care so much about the environment here when I am not even a native of this island. But as I wrote here, it just seems like foreigners care more about Puerto Rico, than the very people who were born here.

But to make myself clear, I do not fight only for this island, I fight for OUR WORLD since people have forgotten that we all belong to this beautiful world. I fight for all the species that exist in this world because we think that we are the only species on this planet.

Not much Support for what I do

I feel that once people know that I am not from this island, that they really don’t support what I have done.

After being shot, that is when more people started to follow me on social media. But with all the people following me, I still feel like I get very little support as I post things on my Facebook pages to raise awareness and hardly anyone shares my messages. Which would help greatly to get my message out.

I spend my time to translate many of the things I post into Spanish here on my website and on my youtube channel, including having a second facebook page to talk directly to the people of this island, which is not very easy for me as my Spanish is not as great. I use google translate. But yet, that also seems like a lost cause and perhaps a waste of time as I feel that many people won’t even read what I write or say.

Many only share things that have no importance to anything, just nonsensical things. Many just want to be entertained. People here share gossip because that is what it seems like the majority of the people enjoy. But that is world we live in. People want to see videos of violence, a fight or other nonsense and things that matter have no importance.

We need more conscious messages in this world. Now everything is all negative as we have become desensitized and choose to saturate our minds with garbage, just like we choose to saturate our world with garbage.

I am sure many would find my messages negative or radical, My messages were for awakening the consciousness of the people. My messages were made for the people to start thinking. The people would respond when I would bring my signs to the beaches and river as they would start cleaning their things and that was good thing, They became much more aware of their surroundings. But it is sad that I needed to walk with signs in the first place.

Wanting to give up

I did not come to Puerto Rico to do what I have done, but it became my responsibility to take care of this beautiful island as I love Puerto Rico. There has been many points during the 6 years of doing this where I said to myself, to the heck with this. It is pointless to continue doing this. I have sacrificed everything just to continue to do this, That includes my life as I mentioned before where I was shot in the face and the many threats on social media. But I continue trying to raise awareness. I continue to take care of this island.

What is the point?

Many could ask what is the point of caring? What is the point of picking up trash. Puerto Rico is such a lost cause, that you can do beach cleanups today and the following week it would be trashed yet again. That has become of our world.

That is the mentality most of the people share. So their point of view is well if no one cares, why should I? But again, I care deeply about our world. I chose to be an earth warrior.

Everything is all connected even if people refuse to see that. All that trash that you leave on the beach because as the people who ignore it would say, it is not theirs, would go on traveling to other parts of the world, other countries. Eventually, when it is all said and done, all that trash is going to come back to this island 4 times worse than before.

Trash is a global problem

I know this is a global problem, this garbage problem is a worldwide thing, but I am not in another country. I’m here, and the problem can be cut down starting right where we live.

It starts with you, stop ignoring the trash and pick up what you see. Does not matter if it is yours. Organize in your communities, start group cleanings. Remove the garbage and replace it with flowers. This is not the world we should want for our seeds, the grandchildren, the future!

I made a simple challenge to everyone to change our environment. It’s called the one trash bag challenge, it’s simple. You bring a bag and pick up what ever you find wherever you go. You can read more about that here.

This island needs more people like me

Puerto Rico is such a beautiful island and I want the people here to realize that they live in paradise and that is how they should treat it. Many people would tell me that this island needs more people like me, I always reply back that all they need to do is look in the mirror, you are staring at the change. Therefore, I want them to realize that they are the change

The change starts with our example, with our action. If you collect garbage on front of the people,chances are they will also pick up garbage since we live in this monkey see, monkey do type of world. Where people need some form of guidance, since many just can’t guide themselves. But chances are they might just look at you strangely, like why are you picking up our decoration for.

Talk to your friends, if they throw away cigarette butts, SPEAK OUT. If you see trash, talk to your friends and organize and say let’s clean that up. You all have a voice and do not want to use it. Then you leave the rubbish behind, come back tomorrow to sit in your own trash.

One of my older signs : “Stop Ignoring the garbage. Pick up what you see. Quit being lazy, If you bring it with you, take it back it back with you to your home.

Let’s do something about it.

Take your garbage home with you, put it in the trash in your home. The people just want others and the government to come clean for them. For something that is the responsibility of the people who use the beautiful beaches here. Take it with you, It is not very difficult. The change starts with you. What you do leaves an impact, leave positive footprints. not ugly ones.

So we can either choose to see this island as being a lost cause and moving out or we can start taking action as I chose to do. This beautiful island, this beautiful world that is our home needs more people to care for it. To heal it from all the scars. BE THAT CHANGE!

I don’t regret all that I have done for the environment here. I hope to have inspired many people with what I have done. Hope that I could have ignited something in the people to be that change.

Watch What Happens When Humanity Ignores Garbage

Here is a video Raising awareness to pollution. When i arrive to the beach, the first thing i do is look around and pick up any garbage that there might be. Anything going into the ocean or anything that can be blown by the wind into the ocean, cups, bags.

It is our responsibility to take action and keep our world clean. Whatever we can do, no matter how small. It still makes an impact and we have to be the collective dents to make a big enough impact and that can only happen if we all work together. Work towards bettering our world.

I see many people ignore the garbage. They just walk by it or sit next to it. They figure it’s not theirs so why should they pick it up and that is the problem with our world. We turn a blind eye to shit that matters. We go on with that mentality, that mentality of well let someone else do that and that just continues and it’s why we have this constant pollution piling up.

Instead of picking up we just continue to contribute, instead of being the solution we continue to be the problem. We pass this on to the next generation and this is what we teach them by ignoring that garbage. The cycle just continues and it has come to the point that all the garbage is now an afterthought. So much garbage, that it has now blended itself into the beautiful scenery, into the paradise that we have forgotten that our world is and truly could be.

Here is a video made by a group called sea shepherd from Uruguay. This video depicts what I have been protesting for in various beaches where I currently reside in the island of Puerto Rico. People leaving the beach often see me with my sign and tell me that they cleaned up “their” garbage, but that other garbage around them is not theirs. In which I remind them that the garbage is everyone’s responsibility, no matter if it is not yours. I tell them that the garbage you leave behind is the inheritance you leave for your children. Not only what they leave for their children, but the other species that inhabit this world that also call this home, as we go on thinking that we are the only species.
